MBTA purchases 41 additional bi-level commuter rail cars from Hyundai Rotem

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will purchase 41 additional bi-level commuter rail cars from Hyundai Rotem, a company that specializes in manufacturing rail vehicles, to replace its aging fleet. The option for the additional cars was included in a 2019 agreement with Hyundai Rotem, which will provide 83 cars to the MBTA.

“As we continue to see a strong return of our commuter rail riders, investing in our rolling stock allows us to not only improve service levels but also provide the public with a more comfortable and reliable experience,” said MBTA Executive Director and General Manager Phillip Eng. “I appreciate Hyundai Rotem’s commitment to continuing to deliver quality rail cars for our passengers and the MBTA managers who have overseen production and quality control testing as we improve service and replace our aging fleet.”

“We will always strive for excellence in order to deliver vehicles that satisfy customers on time,” said Yong Bae Lee, CEO of Hyundai Rotem. “Hyundai Rotem will actively participate in the future U.S. rolling stock market by leveraging its past performance in cooperating with local transportation authorities.”

Features for added convenience and accessibility.

The new commuter cars come equipped with a range of features designed to enhance the travel experience:

  • More spacious seating for up to 179 passengers per car.
  • Designated areas for passengers with disabilities
  • Real-time information systems with automated announcements and message display.
  • Accessible bathrooms upgraded with hands-free faucets
  • USB ports on passenger tables
  • Warm white LED lighting for a more pleasant atmosphere.
  • Bike rack

Safety features

  • Defibrillators in control cars of commuter trains
  • Emergency intercom units
  • Anti-slip paint in hallways
  • Updated signage, including Braille.

“Ridership has only increased post-pandemic, and we expect that trend to continue,” said Michael Muller, MBTA executive director of commuter rail. “These new commuter rail cars will help us meet growing demand while providing our customers with the convenience they deserve.”

The MBTA has received 76 new bi-level commuter rail cars, of which 64 are already in service. The remaining cars are in final testing and are expected to enter service by the end of 2024. The procurement contract with Hyundai Rotem was valued at $305 million.

The agency says the investment in vehicles was underscored by the MBTA’s November 2023 Capital Needs Assessment, which estimated $24.5 billion in repairs and replacements needed across the system. Rolling stock accounted for $2.4 billion.
