Teamsters score two wins in one week at Zen Leaf Cannabis

CHICAGO – August 14, 2024 (Investorideas.com Newswire) – Teamsters Local 777 continues its success in the cannabis industry by winning a new collective bargaining agreement and election at Zen Leaf in less than a week. Zen Leaf is a subsidiary of multi-state operator Verano Holdings.

On Thursday, cannabis consultants and agents at the Zen Leaf dispensary in Rogers Park, Illinois, voted overwhelmingly to ratify their first contract with the Teamsters. Yesterday, workers at the Evanston plant voted overwhelmingly to join the union.

The contract for the Rogers Park location includes wage increases of at least 18 percent over the life of the agreement, more paid holidays and time off, employer-funded 401(k) contributions and protection from wrongful termination. Another key achievement was a provision requiring the successor employer to abide by the collective bargaining agreement if another company takes over the operation.

“Cannabis belongs to the people, the people who have paid and continue to pay the unfair price for its use and possession,” said Jesse Guice, a member of Local 777 at the Rogers Park dispensary. “As the cannabis industry has grown, profits have been prioritized over people too often. Unionization is the first step to getting cannabis back for the people.”

“Teamsters collective bargaining agreements in the cannabis industry are negotiated specifically with the long-term prosperity of our members in mind,” said Peter Finn, Teamsters Western Region International Vice President and Division Director of Food Processing. “Everything we do is geared toward creating middle-class prosperity in this trade.”

The Evanston dispensary is Verano’s fourth dispensary in Illinois represented by Local 777.
