Math

The math tutoring center opened its second location in South Austin at Southpark Meadows. The company offers customized math learning plans for children in grades 1-12. Tutors can also help with test prep, homework, and early childhood math development. Mathnasium Southpark Meadows is owned by Aileen Yu.

Ants’ Beer Cave

The bar opened in The Yard in the St. Elmo arts district. Ants Beer Cave is a beer bar owned by Anthony Capanna that offers a wide selection of bottled and canned beverages. The business features two on-site food trailers and two pickleball courts.

ATX Knuckle Sandwich

The food trailer opened at Ants Beer Cave, located in The Yard in South Austin. The menu includes sandwiches, such as the “Not Boring Turkey,” which features turkey, feta cheese, olive tapenade, Brussels sprouts and red pepper aioli sauce.

The Pizza Den

The food trailer opened at Ants Beer Cave, located in The Yard in South Austin. Pizza Den’s menu includes classic pizzas and specialty items, such as the corn pizza with roasted corn, chipotle cream, cojita cheese, cilantro and tajine.

Lala’s South Pole

Frances Lala opened Lala’s Little Nugget in North Austin in 1972 and now the business has expanded to South Austin. The new year-round holiday bar located near West Gate Boulevard serves beer, wine and specialty cocktails, including the Gin-gle n’ Juice, the South Pole Sour and the X-Mas in July. Lala’s South Pole will also offer pizza from Brooklyn Pie Co.

Coming soon

54th Street

The restaurant and bar serves artisanal sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups and Southern-inspired comfort food such as steak fries, ribs and seafood dishes. 54th Street also serves cocktails, wine and beer.

Halloween Spirit

The seasonal store will open in the former Rue 21 at Barton Creek Square. Spirit Halloween sells costumes, makeup, decorations and more Halloween-themed items.

Budgie Coffee

The coffee shop, independently owned by Joe Kaulbach, will offer coffee and tea drinks as well as pastries from Texas French Bread, a bakery located in downtown Austin. Kaulbach has partnered with four coffee roasters for the shop, including Austin-based Wild Gift Coffee.

Casper

New York-based mattress brand Casper will offer mattresses, pillows, bedding, blankets, bed frames and headboards. The retailer will be located on the lower level of Barton Creek Square, near Warby Parker.

Bricks and minifigures

The authorized Lego retailer owned by Becky and Tommy White will open in Sunset Valley Homestead this fall. Bricks and Minifigs has a location in Cedar Park and the Whites will open the franchise’s first store in South Austin. The retailer buys, sells and trades new and used Lego items.

Imaging studies

The beauty salon suites are owned by Ray and Pia Arthur. Located in South Central Austin at 1600 E. Riverside Drive, Austin, Image Studios offers salon suites for beauty professionals including hair stylists, massage therapists, tattoo artists, estheticians, barbers and more.

Moving

Zen well

The boutique massage studio has moved from its location at 3421 W. William Cannon Drive to a new space located south of Zilker Park, off the MoPac Expressway. Zen Well, owned by massage therapist Brianna Dworsack, offers yoga-based reflexology, as well as Thai, facial and chair massages.

Fast Friends Brewing Company.

The southwest Austin brewery announced July 1 that Laura Cristina Licona, a Michelin-trained chef with 15 years of experience, will be the new culinary program leader. New offerings include tiramisu, dark chocolate olive oil cake, an Italian sub and a chicken and bacon sandwich. Fast Friends Beer Co. opened in May 2023 and was founded by Dave Childress.

Ocean Blue Oyster & Seafood Bar

Deckhand Oyster Bar & Seafood in South Austin has changed its name to Ocean Blue Oyster Bar & Seafood. The menu remains the same and the business will soon have a new logo and signage, according to new co-owner Quynh Pham. He said they hope to expand south, with a new location opening in Kyle next year. Ocean Blue serves made-to-order seafood and seafood dishes, as well as Cajun and Thai cuisine.

Satellite ATX

The South Austin restaurant and bar has new owners. Ben Hardaway and Kullen Kifer purchased the business on July 15. Hardaway said future changes to the business include renovations to the restaurant’s interior, plus changes to the branding and menu to “celebrate Texas and Texas products.” Hardaway said he and Kifer have lived in the Circle C Ranch area and look forward to getting involved in the neighborhood.

Family-run brewery

Two months after announcing the temporary closure of its Dripping Springs location, the brewery has set up shop in the South Austin Beer Garden. According to a social media post, Family Business Beer Company owners Jensen Ackles, his wife, Danneel, and Gino Graul will continue to look for a new location.

SoCo Home Brew

The homebrewing supply store will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Sept. 6. SoCo Homebrew opened in 2014 and is owned by Austin residents Mike Campbell and Joseph Butler. The store offers products to make your own beer, wine, cheese, kombucha, cider, mead and other ferments. In 2023, Campbell and Butler reopened in the space next to Last Stand Brewery after being unexpectedly forced to vacate their space at 8201 S. Congress Ave., Austin.

Baylor Scott Clinic and White Onion Creek

Baylor Scott & White Onion Creek Clinic, which offers primary care, now offers urgent care services. Urgent care can treat patients 6 months or older with allergies, asthma, cold and flu, ear infections, sinus infections, minor burns, and neck and back pain.
