Police remove pieces of Franklin Bridge and dump them in Harpeth River

It’s a crime that has police wondering why it happened and who is to blame in Franklin.

About 100 parapet caps were removed from a bridge near Ryecroft Lane and dumped into the Harpeth River sometime on Aug. 7, Franklin police said.

The caps are protective measures for the bridges, which allow proper drainage of rainwater and also protect the structure from water intrusion, officials explained.

Its removal has resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, researchers said.

“We were notified by a COF parks department employee that an act of vandalism had occurred overnight,” said Officer Ryan Schuman. The exact time was not immediately known.

The motive was also unclear, investigators said.

A bridge parapet covers the wall and both ends of the bridge, creating a uniform appearance while protecting the structure.

In addition to the damage to the bridge, the vandalism also caused damage to property along the Harpeth River, authorities said.

Under Tennessee law, the crime can be considered a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to 1 year in jail and $2,500 fines, or a Class B felony, punishable by 8 to 30 years in prison and $25,000 fines, depending on the specific circumstances.
