Projecting the U.S. Women’s Basketball Team for the 2028 Olympics with Caitlin Clark

French forward Gabby Williams was literally putting the U.S. women’s basketball team in danger of breaking its historic 32-year streak of dominance at the Olympics.

Instead, Team USA extends its winning streak to 61 consecutive games at the Summer Games, winning its eighth consecutive gold medal. One shot nearly drastically altered the international basketball tournament as we know it.

Even though the Americans won by a narrow margin, it serves as a reminder that the rest of the world is catching up to the red, white and blue. USA basketball is still a powerhouse, but the competition is getting tougher.

With the Olympics due to be held in the United States in 2028, the US team will have added pressure to continue their success. Anything less than gold would be a huge disappointment, meaning they need to field their best players.

In other words, the U.S. national team committee can’t let bias cloud its judgment, as it did with Indiana Fever rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.

Although incredibly talented, Clark is a controversial figure due to her huge following. Reports indicated concerns about how his lack of playing time in a list full of candidates, it is taken into account in the decision-making process.

Since being snubbed, Clark has upped her game. Regardless of whether there is any correlation, her improved performance caught the eye of USA Basketball board member and South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley. The latter seems to regret leaving the former off the team for reasons unrelated to basketball.

Given that conclusion, which is wrong, and Clark’s continued rise, we expect the Fever star to represent Team USA at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. But who will be joining her?

As you can see, the U.S. Women’s Olympic Team will usher in a new era led by Clark.

Aging veterans Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and Chelsea Gray will pass the baton. Meanwhile, A’ja Wilson, Alyssa Thomas, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart and Kelsey Plum will take on leadership responsibilities left by their predecessors and former teammates.

Clark headlines a list of notable young talents set to join Team USA. She and Angel Reese, who have had a well-documented rivalry dating back to college, will team up. Additionally, Cameron Brink will presumably play a valuable role as well. This year’s second overall pick is currently recovering from a torn ACL.

One name that may stand out is Paige Bueckers, a standout player at UConn who is not yet in the WNBA. She is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft and is projected to contribute immediately at the professional level.

Overall, this is a balanced group, full of experience, skill and versatility. Team USA would be in prime position to win a ninth consecutive gold medal with Clark and this group.
