One of the big draws on the fair’s first day is the cooking and baking contests, including youth baking, homemade chocolate cake, angel food cake and blue ribbon apple pie. Judges (clockwise from left) Danielle Lucas, Gayle Stahlman and Angela Rice battled to determine who had made the best slow cooker dish.

There are clever decorations all around the fairgrounds, such as this sheep, which bears a message of thanks to those who have attended and will attend during the week.

The 226th Washington County Agricultural Fair got underway this weekend. The state’s oldest fair, which annually attracts more than 64,000 visitors, runs through August 17 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. People enjoyed rides, food, games and many other attractions on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Throughout the week, several musical numbers will be performed and there will be contests ranging from a fairy garden to mullet hair styling and hay hauling.
