Greg Zuerlein and Austin Seibert provide the Jets with powerful kicks

Greg Zuerlein, in his third season as the Jets’ kicker, continues to live up to one of his colorful nicknames, Legatron, and he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. But Austin Seibert, the team’s backup kicker on the roster, could be guaranteeing himself a full-time NFL job in 2024, even if the Green & White release him this offseason.

Both Zuerlein and Seibert kicked historic field goals “for what it’s worth” to help the Jets rally from three ties to defeat the Commanders, 20-17, in their preseason opener Saturday afternoon.

Starting with Seibert, the fourth-year kicker whose most recent field goal of any kind came in his role as Zuerlein’s replacement in Game 2 at Dallas last season, he handled second-half kicking for the Green and White against Washington. That included an extra point and the game-winning 34-yard field goal up the middle with 21 seconds left to give the Jets their first lead of the game and the only one they needed.

Head coach Robert Saleh had high praise for Seibert when asked if he considered going for two points after Izzy Abanikanda’s touchdown run made it 17-16 Washington with 7:09 left.

“No, no. I feel like we have a really good second kicker,” Saleh said. “I think Seibert is better than a lot of kickers that are in the NFL right now. I just wanted to give him some film and give him a chance for other teams to see.”
