Bald Hill Baptist Church in Lufkin celebrates its 110th anniversary

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – This church celebrated its 110th anniversary and invited the public to its Sunday service. There were guest speakers, former and current members, and a recollection of many memories from all these years.

“God is good, He has helped us through all these changes, but if we didn’t have God with us in our church, I don’t think it would last this long,” said church member Dorothy Dorsett.

Among those recounting their memories were Dorsett and Beth Wisener. They sat in front of the congregation to talk about their early days at the church, which involved construction and moving to another building.

“They worked long hours and it took them about a year to build the church. Then they had the dedication of the building in 1970,” Wisener said.

The decorations are also worth highlighting.

“We added some old things and some new things and made it look nice,” said church member Debra Dunn.

“For me, magnolias represent a memory of yesteryear,” said church member Rebecca Howard.

“There are a lot of magnolias in East Texas,” Dunn said.

Both women agreed that the occasion was special and worthy of decoration.

“Not all churches can stand the test of time and God is with us,” Howard said.

“People are what make the church and we have a lot of people behind this church and in this community,” Dunn said.

Pastor Fancher says they are a small church and although they have had problems with member retention, he has faith that the church will continue for a long time to come.

“The church is still going and we are not going to close. That is what it means is that we have faithful members and also some of the older members who were here years ago, long before me,” Fancher said.

Unsure of the exact day, Pastor Fancher says the church was founded in August 1914.
