Minor flooding forecast for the region | News, Sports, Employment

LEWISTOWN — The National Weather Service is warning of minor flooding in central Pennsylvania, including Mifflin and Juniata counties. These regions are expected to receive three to four inches of rain Thursday night into Friday.

With a light start to rainfall on the evening of Thursday 8 August, showers are forecast to last until around 2pm on Friday 9 August.

The heaviest rainfall is expected throughout the day on Friday, with the possibility of persistent showers overnight into Saturday morning.

“People should slow down and be aware of water on the roads.” explained Brain Fleegal, the 911 supervisor at the Mifflin County Office of Public Safety.

According to the State College and Mid-Atlantic River Forecast Center, the Juniata River will crest at 2 p.m. Saturday, nearing 21 feet. While this level is below flood stage, it is expected to cause minor flooding in areas adjacent to the Juniata River.

PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency remind Pennsylvanians to use caution during periods of heavy rainfall.

In the event of a rain-related non-emergency, affected individuals should call the Mifflin County Public Safety Office’s non-emergency number. The safety office will direct callers to the appropriate resources.

Some local areas can expect three to seven inches of rain, especially for those residing in flood-prone areas. Residents in those areas should monitor additional reports from the National Weather Service to stay informed about potential flooding.
