University of Alabama hires new vice president for finance

Layzell has more than two decades of experience in higher education administration, strategic planning and financial oversight. Prior to his appointment at UA, he served as vice chancellor for finance and operations at Appalachian State University. Layzell also held executive financial leadership positions at Louisiana State University, Illinois State University and Cornell College.

UA President Stuart R. Bell said Layzell brings an impressive track record to the Tuscaloosa campus.

“Dr. Layzell’s extensive experience and proven leadership in higher education finance and operations make him an excellent addition to our team,” Bell said. “His strategic vision, track record of financial management, and commitment to fostering innovative partnerships will be instrumental in enhancing our operational excellence and driving our mission.”

Layzell said he is looking forward to joining the UA.

“The university has a high profile nationally and internationally, and the positive momentum here is only growing,” Layzell said. “I am excited to be part of Dr. Bell’s leadership team and look forward to the important work ahead to keep UA moving forward and improving.”

In his new role, Layzell will serve as UA’s chief business officer and report directly to the president. In support of and in collaboration with the president and his executive team, the position advances UA’s mission and vision and provides executive-level leadership, strategic direction and management oversight for all aspects of the university’s financial and operational resources.

Layzell will lead UA’s Division of Finance and Operations, which includes more than 1,300 team members across nine departments, including all aspects of finance, business analytics and process improvement, compliance and risk services, campus development, enterprise operations, facilities and grounds, human resources, public safety and shared administrative services.

Layzell replaces Matt Fajack, who is now vice chancellor for finance at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
