‘Noles concludes 11th practice with eyes set on UNF

Florida State wrapped up its 11th preseason practice Tuesday morning with the team in the middle of a four-day stretch that will continue with two sessions in Jacksonville. The Seminoles focused primarily on special teams and situations, lightening the workload but not the intensity between the lines.

Coach Mike Norvell pushed his team from start to finish, demanding effort and execution. The Seminoles responded with a pair of really competitive sequences.

NoleGameday was present at the session and below we list some observations from different position groups and players. This report will be a little shorter than some of our previous editions.

— The Carolina Panthers, New York Jets and New England Patriots had representatives observing practice.

— Ryan Fitzgerald and Jake Weinberg were very good again, not missing many shots this preseason. Fitzgerald connected from 21 and 32 yards. Weinberg matched him from 21 yards.

— Brian Courtney did a great job during the special teams period. He will be an important piece on that unit once again.

— It was a back-and-forth drill between the offense and defense, with both teams popping up with big plays. DJ Uiagalelei did his part early on to get the offense moving in a situational drill after advancing in the pocket to avoid pressure before finding Malik Benson over the middle between two defenders for a fourth-down conversion. He dug in later in the drive for another first down at midfield. Uiagalelei kept things going with good awareness in the pocket, stopping and hitting Benson with pressure on him. He followed that up with a quick pass to Elijah Moore later in the possession. The pass came over the middle after Uiagalelei recognized an incoming blitz with Ryan Fitzgerald finishing things off with a 32-yard kick.

— Luke Kromenhoek threw a perfect pass to Elijah Moore in the middle of the field. The pass was accurate but also hard enough to hit the wide receiver as Justin Cryer tried to deflect it. Kromenhoek also connected with Amaree Williams on the sideline for one of the catches of the day. The ball was in a good spot, allowing Williams to adjust and catch it while staying in bounds with Cam Riley on his heels.

— The offense worked through end-of-game scenarios at the end of practice, and one of them was a desperation pass into the end zone. Brock Glenn stepped out of the pocket and threw a pass toward the end zone while running. He was in the perfect spot for rookie Elijah Moore to go up and grab it out of the sky. It’s worth noting that I’m not sure if the defensive backfield was “alive” on the play.

— Roydell Williams made a nice block on Byron Turner Jr. to open up space for DJ Uiagalelei to run up the middle.

— Brian Courtney took a pass over the middle and exploded near the edge of the goal line at the end of team drills. It’s hard to say whether he scored or not from my perspective.

— Active day for Elijah Moore. He’s had two good practices after a spectacular catch in the first scrimmage. The rookie is impressing lately.

— Blake Nichelson had a strong showing on Tuesday, as the second-year linebacker was constantly around the ball. He tackled Lawrance Toafili for no gain out of the backfield, coming in to hit him just as the ball touched the running back’s hands. Nichelson combined with Omar Graham Jr. for a sack on the same series, in which both defenders showed good effort and pursuit. Later in the day, he deflected a pass in the end zone to prevent a touchdown.

— Edwin Joseph continues his rise this preseason. He deflected a pass in the final moments of practice. Joseph also nearly intercepted a pass near the end zone in a competitive pass coverage replay. He stayed with Amaree Williams and briefly had the ball in his hands before it fell to the turf.

— Azareye’h Thomas played tight coverage on Darion Williamson, deflecting a pass on what was a potential interception opportunity. Thomas also managed to grab DJ Uiagalelei for a sack after easily eluding a running back on a blitz play.

— Patrick Payton did a great job in the middle of the defense. He stood his ground on a running play, plugging the gap and allowing Graham Jr. to make a stop.

— Marvin Jones Jr. had an explosive performance off the edge, where he battled with Jeremiah Byers to pressure Uiagalelei. Byers kept Jones Jr. away from the quarterback, but his presence was enough to force a dropped pass.

— Tomiwa Durojaiye, Daniel Lyons and KJ Sampson created constant pressure. Sampson deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage at one point.

— I thought it was a solid practice for Charles Lester III. He was in position to tackle Kam Davis on a throw out of the backfield. Lester battled with Deuce Spann in coverage to force an incomplete pass over the middle. He nearly intercepted a pass on a throw out of the backfield that got away from Kromenhoek.

— Timir Hickman-Collins broke free from a block by Amaree Williams for a sack.

— Kevin Knowles tackled Toafili short of the line to gain and force a fourth down.

— Omarion Cooper managed to get through on a blitz play that likely would have resulted in a sack in a real game. Brock Glenn ended up scrambling for a short gain instead.

— Linebacker AJ Cottrill fought off a block to stop Roydell Williams and lose possession of the ball on a throw from the backfield. Good read and reaction.
