Thunderstorms and inch-sized hail hit the Chicago area Monday morning, and scattered showers are expected to continue.

Storms moved into the Chicago area Monday morning, hitting parts of the city with 1-inch hail before clearing with a chance for more rain this afternoon.

The Chicago office of the National Weather Service issued a Hazardous weather outlook Warning of possible winds up to 60 mph, hail, and an increased risk of tornadoes for parts of north central Illinois, northeastern Illinois, and northwestern Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service, the rain began early Monday and hit parts of Lake and Cook counties. Inch-sized hailstones were reported in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood, while quarter-sized hailstones fell in the northern suburb of Highland Park, said Casey Sullivan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

By 10:30 a.m., the rain had largely passed over Chicago and was expected to end in northwest Indiana in the next few hours, Sullivan said. More storms could form this afternoon.

“It will be a somewhat isolated coverage with the potential for it to become severe,” Sullivan said.

Stormy weather could continue overnight and into Tuesday morning, when a cold front is expected to move through the area, Sullivan said. Areas north of Chicago near the lake will likely see temperatures in the mid-60s, while temperatures in areas south of Chicago are expected to be in the mid-90s.

“Once we get through tomorrow night, the rest of the week looks nice with low humidity, dry conditions and seasonal temperatures.”
