Texas mother charged with murder in the 2023 death of infant left inside hot car

HOUSTON, Texas (KWTX) – Gabriela Elyzabeth Deras, 22, is charged with murder in the death of her 2-month-old son Ethan Rosa Deras, Houston police confirmed Monday.

The child was unresponsive outside a home at 5901 Long Drive at about 3:25 pm on August 8, 2023.

Investigators learned the infant was left in a vehicle for some time before he was discovered, unresponsive, by family members.

Medical assistance was provided to the infant until Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported him to an area hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Further investigation and an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined baby Ethan’s manner of death to be homicide, police said.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office eventually charged Deras, who was arrested August 2, 2024 without incident and then booked into the Harris County Jail.
