JEA pays close attention to San Marco as Debby causes flooding in the area

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – Flooding began to be a problem for cars and trucks driving through the San Marco neighborhood early Monday amid Tropical Storm Debby.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 2 p.m. update, Tropical Storm Debby is moving slowly over northeast Florida as it continues to weaken.

The storm is expected to cause severe flooding in Florida and Georgia.

JEA officials said they are paying close attention to this area, which is no stranger to flooding, adding that they have 200 crews ready to respond in case of any problems.

As of Monday morning, JEA said it had already responded to several flood-related issues in the area.

Flooding is nothing new in the neighborhood. Residents have had to deal with problematic flooding for generations.

For that reason, the City of Jacksonville began construction of a pumping station in May 2023, which is expected to significantly improve flooding problems in the area.

“It won’t eliminate all flooding, but it will significantly improve conditions here. If it’s 12 or 24 inches, we’ll probably get it down to 6 inches,” Joe Kantor, the project’s development director, told News4JAX in late July.

The new pumping station is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025.
