Excessive heat will continue as storms move through the Phoenix metropolitan area

PHOENIX (AZ family)—The National Weather Service said thunderstorms are forming in the Valley, bringing lightning, heavy rain and strong winds gusting to 30 to 40 miles per hour. The storms are expected to last until 10 p.m. Sunday.

The Valley and western Arizona are also under an excessive heat warning that will continue until Monday at 8 p.m.

Phoenix broke a record yesterday with a high temperature of 116 degrees, and we’re on track to hit similar temperatures on Sunday.

There is a slight chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms Sunday night in Phoenix, with continued activity in the upper reaches. These storms could bring strong wind gusts that could generate scattered dust and heavy rainfall.

Parts of the Valley, including northern Phoenix and Chandler, experienced rain and wind as storms moved through Arizona Sunday night.

Our weather pattern will change as we head into a new week, with Phoenix monsoon activity looking slightly better.

Storm chances will increase Tuesday night as more moisture from northern Mexico moves into the state.

An inverted trough will remain in place through Thursday, possibly extending storm chances into midweek. There is a 20 to 30 percent chance of activity reaching Phoenix.

Temperatures will also drop slightly and return to seasonal levels (around 106 degrees) by midweek, but we will again reach 110 degrees or higher from Friday through the weekend.
