Arizona senator reportedly still on Kamala Harris’ running mate list

It’s been weeks since Vice President Kamala Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential front-runner, and Harris is expected to name a running mate on Tuesday.

Several vice presidential candidates are on the shortlist, with final interviews reportedly taking place in Washington over the weekend. One of the leading contenders for the post is Arizona Senator Mark Kelly.

Kelly, a former astronaut whose wife is former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, is reportedly on the shortlist to be Harris’ running mate. He also reportedly had an in-person meeting with Harris. Other candidates up for election include Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

However, there is still a lot of confusion about his status, and that was sparked by a post on social media.

On the afternoon of August 4, Kelly posted on her personal account X (formerly Twitter) a post that read: “My background is a little different than most politicians. I spent my life serving in the Navy and NASA where the mission always comes first. Now, my mission is to serve Arizonans.” Many saw that as a sign that she plans to serve out her term in the Senate. Kelly’s seat is up for re-election in 2028.

However, Kelly later dismissed the post and released another statement that read: “Whether during my time in the Navy and at NASA, serving in the United States Senate or visiting our troops overseas – I have learned that when your country calls you to serve, you always answer the call.”

Harris is said to be appearing with her running mate at a rally in Philadelphia scheduled for August 6.
