Dear Abby: My friend backed out of our plans, now I don’t trust her.

Dear Abby: My friend backed out of our plans, now I don’t trust her.

DEAR ABBY: I recently made plans with a friend. A couple of days before, when I texted her to ask if we were still together, she told me she had made other plans. She claims she forgot we had plans, but she told the other person that nothing was set in stone, so she opted to hang out with her for a special birthday dinner.

My friend admitted that she wanted to spend time with the other person, which is fine, but I don’t understand why she lied to me about forgetting about our plans. Now I don’t trust what she says anymore. Lying doesn’t build relationships and she doesn’t seem to care how I feel. I don’t know how to respond to her now because she doesn’t understand why I’m upset, regardless of what I say. — ZARPA IN MICHIGAN

DEAR DOWNLOAD: Stop responding to this person, who seems more like an unconventional person than a friend. If she is worth your time, visit her at your convenience, and if she offers you a better deal, don’t hesitate to accept it (after telling her what you’re up to, of course). Simply standing her up would be rude.
