ESCANABA — There’s no doubt that the Michigan-Wisconsin Open tennis tournament has stood the test of time.

The MW Open, which has been held for 77 years, begins with singles matches on Saturday and continues with doubles competition on Sunday.

Players must check in at 8 a.m. at Ludington Park.

Games begin shortly after check-in and will also be played on the high school and Veterans Park fields.

According to tournament director Tom Penegor, approximately 75 players had registered as of Tuesday.

“One of the positive aspects is that we have nine entrants in the men’s A class, which is probably the most we’ve had in about 10 years.” he said. “Another positive aspect is that we have players from Marquette, Ishpeming, Houghton, Iron River, Menominee, Wallace, Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Niagara, Wisconsin, Elk Rapids, Traverse City, Williamsburg, Gaylord and Illinois. This is the only tennis tournament (of its kind) that exists.”

Among the participants is a trio of Escanaba High School graduates.

Among them are former Lake Superior State University player and coach Luke Ogren, who now coaches the Western Illinois University women’s team. Joining him are former LSSU player Steve Prica and 2023 Upper Peninsula Division 1 singles champion Dawson Williams.

Also looking to compete are former champion Holden Ross and Nolan Anderson, both from Iron River.

Among those entered in Class A doubles are current Kingsford coach Alex Shanks and former Menominee coach John Antilla.

Also enrolled are Esky’s Connor Howes, Andrew Lord, Nick Chaillier and Nick Garcia, who are entering their senior years, and recent graduate Jackson Cousineau.

Coach Penegor says he would like to see more kids come out.

“I would like to see more girls in the tournament, especially now that their season is just around the corner.” he added. “This would be good preparation for them. I also encourage the boys players to participate. I just want them to compete and get better. I would like to see the fans come out and support these people. They could see some good tennis. I appreciate the support of the community, the city of Escanaba, the school district, the volunteer helpers and Denny Lueneburg for everything they do.”
