Sarcastic tweet sparks outrage among Michigan residents

A discussion among Michigan users on the X-media platform was sparked by a tweet proclaiming that northwest Michigan is the “worst place on earth.”

The tweet, which received 6.5 million views, was posted on X on Wednesday by user “MilkManMSU.” The tweet includes an image of a map of Michigan with the northwestern area of the Lower Peninsula and parts of the Upper Peninsula circled in red and a caption that reads: “Just your annual reminder that this is the worst place on earth. Never visit. Especially in the summer.”

Cities in the red circled area include popular Michigan tourist destinations such as Mackinac Island, Traverse City, Holland, Cadillac and Alpena, some of which receive millions of visitors each summer.

Some X users followed through on the joke and responded to the tweet with photos of various sunny, serene Michigan lakes and area destinations, with sarcastic captions satirizing users who took the tweet seriously.

User Bobby Lobdell posted a pleasant photo of a sunset over a lake with the caption: “Terrible sunset last night!”, while user Veritas Libertas posted a cute German Shepherd on a sandy shore with the caption: “absolutely unbearable.”

Two days later, MilkManMSU took to X to repost the tweet with a new caption that read: “There’s a worrying amount of people who think I’m serious.”

Commenters on the most recent tweet mocked those who took the joke seriously. User “William Kiefer” responded: “Sarcasm has never translated well on the internet for those who aren’t sarcastic. Let’s just call it an inside joke and let everyone else whine and gnash their teeth,” while user “Karrie” joked: “Let them think what they want! That’s a horrible place to go.”

MilkManMSU then responded to his post a day later with a tweet that read: “Or was it me…”
