Showers and thunderstorms possible starting Sunday – NBC Chicago

While Saturday started off with favorable conditions and mostly sunny skies, the weekend could end on a different note.

Showers and thunderstorms could return Sunday, with storms most likely in communities northwest of Interstate 55, according to the National Weather Service.

The rainfall could be a sign of what is to come in the coming days.

Here’s what to expect and when:

Sunday

A slight chance of showers is expected throughout the day, with a chance of rain and thunderstorms in the late afternoon.

According to the NWS, high temperatures will be in the mid-80s. Scattered thunderstorms are possible, especially northwest of I-55.

Chances will increase slightly in the afternoon and evening hours, with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 a.m.

Monday

The Chicago area is likely to experience wet weather to kick off the workweek, with a 50 percent chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

As wet conditions persist Monday, rain and thunderstorms are possible, with a 40 to 70 percent chance. In addition to storms, torrential rain cannot be ruled out, according to the NWS.

The chance of rain could decrease slightly at night, to between 20 and 40 percent.

Tuesday and beyond

The Chicago area will not be exactly clear Tuesday. There will again be a chance for showers, though the chances will drop to around 30 percent.

High temperatures will drop to around 70 degrees, setting a similar pattern for the following days, according to the NWS.

High temperatures between 75 and 79°F are expected, along with increasing sunshine, through Friday.
