A surprising 72% do not believe Biden has the mental and physical strength to be president, according to a poll

A shocking 72% of registered voters do not believe President Biden has the “mental and cognitive health necessary to serve as president,” according to a new poll.

Only 27% considered that Biden, 81, has the mental strength necessary for the grueling tasks of commander in chief, marking a drop in the finding compared to just over two weeks ago (35% “yes” to 65 % “no”), according to a CBS News/YouGov poll.

The previous survey was conducted on June 9. The new one was held between June 28 and 29 to evaluate the consequences of the debate against former President Donald Trump that more than 51 million watched.

Among Democratic voters, 59% believe Biden has the cognitive abilities to be president, compared with 41% who do not. This is down from 71% who “do” to 29% who “do not” in the June 9 poll.

Responses were evenly split when the same question was asked about Trump, 78. Fifty percent of respondents said they felt the former president has the cognitive ability for the job, while 49% believe he doesn’t.

In another bad sign for Biden, only 54% of Democrats think he should run for president, compared with 46% who do not want him to run, a 10-point drop from 64% to 36% in February, respectively, according to the poll.

Among the general electorate, 72% say he should not run, while 28% want him to, marking a drop from 63% to 37% in February.

When asked to explain their concerns about Biden’s physical fitness, 86% cited his age, 71% the decisions he might make in office, 66% his record and 59% his ability to campaign.

Yet a large portion of voters ignore the debate.

Voters overall felt Biden was more candid than Trump (40% to 32%), and 21% believed Biden “presented ideas clearly” during the Atlanta showdown last week.

The CBS News/YouGov poll sampled 1,130 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points in that core bloc.

Some close allies of Biden complained that the poll did not show results between the current president and Trump if the election were held today.

Biden’s debate performance on Thursday sparked mass panic among Democrats after the president appeared incoherent at times and stared into the cameras.

Some Democrats have criticized Biden’s team for suffering from a “delusion” and have called for him to be replaced at the head of the ticket.

Post cover story after the debate.

For now, prominent Democrats, including former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as congressional leaders, have rallied around Biden.

Biden himself later admitted, “I don’t debate as well as I used to,” but stressed that he would not run for reelection if he lacked confidence in his abilities.

The 81-year-old is expected to be crowned the Democratic standard-bearer in the coming weeks, ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August.
