Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo Responds to Whitmire’s Comments About Her Fiance

First on the list for Tuesday’s Harris County Commissioners Court agenda: Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo publicly declared that she, like her future husband, is also a nerd: two peas in a pod .

Hidalgo’s announcement came in response to Houston Mayor John Whitmire’s Facebook comment that Hidalgo’s fiancé seemed like a nerd.

“Whether he said it as a joke or not and whether he intended it to be public or not. I’m glad he took it down,” Hidalgo said during a news conference Tuesday. “But I actually see my fiance there and not only is he a nerd, I’m a nerd too and I can’t wait for us to get married.”

Quorum Report journalist and political analyst Scott Braddock shared a screenshot of Whitmire’s interaction with Hidalgo’s post celebrating her bachelorette party. The comment from the mayor’s verified account has since been deleted.

This isn’t the first time Whitmire has left a comment on a fellow politician’s page and then deleted it. Whitmire commented “dumb” on a post by Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner examining the damage caused by the derecho in May.

A spokesperson for Whitmire’s office reportedly said the comment was intended to be light-hearted and not to inflict harm. They added that he wanted to congratulate the couple and wish them the best.

Hidalgo announced in January that she was engaged to attorney David James, who works for the Austin-based law firm Edwards Law.
