Inmate found unconscious at Washington County Jail

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Georgia (WJBF) – An inmate was found unresponsive in his Washington County Jail cell at approximately 7:17 a.m. on June 25, according to a statement issued by Sheriff Joel Cochran.

Emergency crews responded to the scene where the inmate was declared deceased.

The inmate, who has not yet been identified, was reportedly received from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office for housing on June 14.

The Eastman Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Washington County Coroner’s Office were called to investigate the situation according to policy guidelines.

According to the news release, the inmate is believed to have died from a medical event due to an underlying medical condition. An autopsy will be performed to determine the official cause of the inmate’s death.

The case remains active by the GBI.
