Joyce Charmatz Obituary – Chicago (1939-2024)

Joyce Kagan Charmatz, age 85, of Chicago, IL, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024. She is survived by her two sons, Irv (Ali) Kagan of Chicago and Jeffrey (Amy) Kagan of Westfield, New Jersey; five grandchildren, Sam, Joey, Benjamin, Sophie and Noah; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Stanley Kagan and Lester Charmatz.

Joyce, a native New Yorker who enthusiastically embraced her life as a Chicago resident, was most recently the founder and president of Keep Chicago Beautiful and Keep Illinois Beautiful. She created an unprecedented partnership between Chicago’s civic and corporate communities and educated countless constituents about the importance of environmental stewardship.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 17, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Temple Sholom of Chicago, 3480 N. Lake Shore Drive, with shiva to follow immediately following the service. Family and friends who cannot attend the funeral can view it live on their website www.mitzvahfunerals.com or at any time after the funeral.
